Thought I'd try something new this year and write, or try to write: "Things that I like" per day. Or try to. Gets my mind moving and reconnect with the little things in life. =D
I love cats. There is something about them that makes a perfect
animal companion. I am not sure specifically what made me first like
them, maybe it is their mannerisms, their quirks, my experiences with
them compared to dogs, or maybe it's because of how easy they are to
care for. Whatever it is, I think cats are the most perfect pet.
The first cat I can remember owning is a medium haired calico named Ming-Ming. She was an outdoor cat that usually came in and out of the house at leisure. I remember carrying her around, playing with her, petting her, and laying her on people when they were sleeping. She was a really easygoing cat. Not much fuss and also a very good mom. I think we had 3 litters from her. From her first litter we kept two orange tabbies. One we named Garfield and the other we named Morris. As you can see, our naming process is very obvious. Haha.
Garfield was nothing like his namesake, he had a normal appetite, loved playing and rolling around in the yard, and scaring away birds. I think this is why our skies for a while were rather quiet. Oops! Anyways, Garfield loved playing with his brother Morris. Now Morris was more like his Mom. Quiet, laid back, easy going type of guy. These guys were so fun to have around. They were never really naughty, but then again they were not indoor cats. I think despite being outdoor cats, they lived for a VERY long time. Maybe about 15 years. My grandmother lived with us at the time so eventually as my sister and I grew older she became their companion. I don't think my mother told my grandmother what happened to the cats when they died. I think she was told they never showed up again. I do remember finding one of the cats laying on the front yard and not moving. Upset by the situation I called my dad and he took care of the funeral arrangements. This was the first time we buried a cat at the side of our yard.
After Garfield and Morris there happened to be a litter of kittens that were born in our garage. It was from a very small, longhaird black cat. She gave birth to a pair of white kittens, a grey tabby, and a black and white. We gave the white kittens to some twin girls that lived down the street from us, and kept the grey and black and white cats. The grey we named Ejay after my dad and his grey hair, and the black and white we named Beshur. I don't remember why we named her that, but it stuck. They were such an inseparable pair. Ejay was the quieter of the two while Beshur was the more dominant female. Unfortunately after a year, Beshur died from Feline Distemper and was unable to survive treatment. This, I think affected Ejay very much. For weeks he would call to her and not find out. After that, I think he didn't know how to be a dominant cat. Being quite shy he would sleep on my bed, hideaway behind or underneath couches or just hangout in the long grass in the backyard. I think my love for cats began with this little fellow. He loved eating at the table, following me around, and made sure he was by my side at the end of the day. When I moved out of my parents home, I could not take Ejay with me. It broke my heart, but what can you do? My parents told me he was very lonely without me. He would cry out, wait patiently by my bedroom door, and eat quietly by himself. He was a good cat, but a very lonely one. One day I got a call from my dad, he was obviously upset. He told me the cat had died. He found him by the steps that run up to our back door. I don't think I cried so much and felt so bad to leave him alone. Later, we were told he died of food poisoning. Stupid neighbors. I still think about that cat now and again.
For a year I lived without a cat. I felt an emptiness in the apartment. It seemed like a little ghost cat would crawl out from underneath my college futon, or sit on the carpet in the bathroom while I took a bath, or meow at my feet in the morning to let me know it was feeding time. So finally against the rules of the apartment I decided to go to the SPCA to get a kitten. I got ready and took a bus out to the SPCA at the 16th street location. There they had a kitten room. YAY! I mean just saying "kitten room" is fantastic enough. I sanitized my hands and looked at the cages. There were so many! I couldn't believe how many there were. Though out of the yelping, crying, big eyes, poopie feets there was one that caught my eye.
She was this quiet little mound of fluff in the middle of the cage.
She didn't say anything, but stared at me. One of the workers at the
shelter said she had a brother and both of them were found in a box and
were infested with fleas. If they didn't find them, they surely
would've died. It really broke my heart. I look aboved her cage and
her name was Arwen. At the time Lord of the Rings was very popular, so
it was obvious that she was named after the movie. They opened her cage
for me and out of no-where a SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!! Belted out from her
tiny maw. Maybe it was the one note pitch that sealed the deal, or
maybe it was her big colorado colored eyes, but I knew I had to take
her home. The picture above was the first photo I took of her when she
arrived in the apartment. After I took it she ran into the lense and
fell over. @^_^@ !!!! She is my little fluffy-butt and I would do
anything to protect her. We've been through so much, so many "dates"
and times where she ate better than I did. I adore this cat and I hope
she adores me. hehe.
Here are some words to describe Arwen (aka Bubblah).
Skittish, shy, crazy, dominant, bossy, loud, talkative, loves water, petting lush, furry, demanding, princess. =)
She had many instances of strangeness. Her losing her tooth from running into my futon, having an aversion to tape after some of it got stuck to her fur and had to be cut off, and lastly meeting Minou.
One thing about my husband is that he came with an adorable cat. It was one of the many awesome things about him. I don't think I could live with someone who didn't love cats as much as I do. Or talk to their cats as much as I do... or well... I guess if I didn't meet Kyle I would've been the Crazy Cat Lady.
There has been no other pet that has greeted me so happily when I come home, that sleeps on me to keep me warm, or who knows when I'm sad and just quietly sits near me to make me feel better. These are the little happy faces in my life.
